Carrier Oils to Have on Hand / Essential Oils

Simple Steps to Healthy logo

Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils for either topical or internal use. In this post, I am sharing a list of carrier oils to have on hand that will assist you when using essential oils.  There are several listed that can be used for multiple purposes, but I am focusing on topical use.

Resources to information shared are listed at the bottom of this post.

organic unrefined coconut oil

Organic Unrefined Coconut Oil

  • salves
  • creams
  • body butters
  • topical dilution

Coconut oil is naturally hydrating, so it will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.  Click here for the recipe of a scrumptious body cream that will transition dry, flaky skin to buttery soft. Not to mention, you will smell like a creamsicle.

Fractionated coconut oil

Fractionated Coconut oil

  • liquid at room temperature
  • will not solidify
  • tasteless and odorless
  • used for roller blends

Fractionated coconut oil is made from regular coconut oil but stays in liquid form.  By combining pure essential oils with fractionated coconut oil, it will not only dilute oils that could potentially be hot to the skin but also carry the essential oil further.

Certain essential oils may sting your eyes and other sensitive areas of skin.  It’s always a good idea to dilute an essential oil to see how your skin will react before attempting to apply it neat.

V-6 oil

V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex

  • great for massages
  • helps soothe minor skin irritations
  • used for roller blends

V-6 Vegetable oil complex is a blend of fractionated coconut oil, sesame seed oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil, sunflower seed oil, and extra virgin olive oil. Click here to order directly from Young Living.

cold-pressed olive oil

Organic Cold-Pressed Olive Oil

  • can be used for internal or topical application
  • can promote hair growth

Cold-pressed means the olives never exceed a certain temperature while they are being extracted.  The process of extraction stays around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.   Cold-pressed oils are known to improve cooking because the nutrients aren’t lost during heating extraction.   Because of this method, cold-pressed oils are free from chemicals and packed with essential nutrients that will nourish the skin.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba Oil

  • liquid at room temperature
  • roller blends
  • facial serums
  • good for all skin types
  • will not clog pores
  • anti-aging
  • natural make-up remover
  • soothes skin irritations

While fractionated coconut oil is primarily used for roller blends, Jojoba oil should be used for facial serums.  Coconut oil applied to the face is more likely to result in clogged pores.  Jojoba oil is non- comedogenic which means it should not clog the pores.  It will also work to balance the natural oils in your skin.   Jojoba oil is similar to your skin’s sebum; therefore, your skin accepts Jojoba as it’s own supply.

Argan oil

Argan Oil

  • liquid at room temperature
  • high concentrate of Vitamin E
  • natural moisturizer
  • can be ingested or applied topically
  • has anti-inflammatory properties

Argan oil can be used as a moisturizer because of it’s natural anti-inflammatory properties.  It is rich in Vitamin E and will help reduce damaging effects caused by free radicals.  Studies have shown that Argan oil both ingested and administered topically can increase skin’s  elasticity and hydration in postmenopausal women.

castor oil

Castor Oil

  • eyelash serums
  • adrenal serums
  • anti-inflammatory properties
  • antimicrobial
  • moisturizing

According to the Journal of Science and Research, Castor oil contains 90% ricinoleic acid and omega-6 fatty acids which may help moisturize and improve the health of hair.

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E Oil

  • natural moisturizer
  • may diminish dark skin spots
  • may fade scars
  • fights signs of aging
  • anti-inflammatory properties
  • helps with elasticity and hydration

Because Vitamin E oil is a natural antioxidant, so it can help fight against free radicals. Free radicals cause cell mutation. That can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and certain diseases.  It also absorbs UV light, so it acts as a natural barrier against the sun.  Layer Vitamin E oil  under your daily sunscreen for added protection.

I hope you found this list of carrier oils to have on hand useful.  Keep an eye out for a future post highlighting my favorite skin care recipes using oils mentioned in this post.
