We all put off projects for different reasons. Some seem like such daunting tasks, while others may not even be hard, but we just can’t get ourselves to take the plunge. I’ll admit, I have quite a list. This got me thinking… becoming a blogger has forced me to take on some of these daunting projects. I started Simple Cozy Charm because I wanted to share ideas and inspire others. Well, inspiring others isn’t just peppering in an occasional “You can do it!” or “Don’t give up…” phrases. This blog has actually held me accountable and pushed me to expand my creative side.
Well, daunting is the perfect way to describe how I felt about painting our front door. I have wanted to change the color for years. Each Spring I would plan to investigate techniques and colors and, all of a sudden, summer would be gone, and I was registering kids for school. Another opportunity lost to procrastination.
*Did you catch the word SURPRISE in the title? Someone is going to win 2 bottles paint to makeover their front door OR any other outdoor project in THE color of the season!
Details are at the end 😀
This past Winter, I entered a contest introduced by DecoArt.com. I had to submit a photo of our front door, and they would choose a select number of entries who would then make over their front doors using DecoArt Americana Curb Appeal Paint.
I was chosen! I couldn’t believe it. I was so excited and immediately panicked! No more procrastination. This would finally force me to take action. And friends, I did it in ONE DAY!!
Luscious, creamy, Contemporary Coral now covers our once dark and dated front door. Our home has real curb appeal for the first time!
The process was easy! Here are the steps and items used.
- Americana Decor Curb Appeal Durable Exterior Home Decor Paint in Contemporary Coral
- Paint Brush – I used a Wooster Shortcut
- 3M ScotchBlue Tape
- Sand paper – light grade
- Soft Cloth
- Handy Paint Pail 🙂
Here’s my “once” ugly front door!
Blech!
I was a little nervous about painting it, because it had such a high gloss finish to it, but it wasn’t hard at all.
First I wiped down the door to rid all cob webs and such 😉
I wet a piece of sand paper, and lightly buffed off the high sheen, then wiped it clean with a soft cloth.
Next, I just started applying the first coat. Obviously painting over a color this dark would take multiple coats with a shade this much lighter. I brushed it on, not rolled to ensure getting in the crevices well.
The second coat covered really well, I was tickled pink with the progress 😉
Funny how lighting plays such a huge part in photographing true colors. I got lucky with the weather and I just left the door propped open while painting on a sunny day in March.
I ultimately applied 3 coats of paint, but this paint would normally cover in 2 coats. My door was just so dark, I applied 3 just to be safe. I am in complete awe of the way it turned out. I had imagined this exact outcome, but honestly couldn’t believe it actually came to be!
It was so much fun styling this beauty, I love how fresh greens and navy accent the coral. I have always wanted a door knocker, and decided a kick plate would be a fun accessory too. I found a fun wreath at Pier 1, but then saw this idea on Pinterest and had to try it <3
Friends, Americana Decor Curb Appeal outdoor paint was so easy to apply. It is fade resistant, and has been specially formulated to work on doors (wood or metal), shutters, railings, mailboxes, and more! There is no sealant required, and the finish is a beautiful semi-gloss. I absolutely LOVE the soft sheen it gave our door and highly recommend this product. I have had so many people reach out to me already regarding the paint and process used. So happy to finally share all the info with you!

I LOVE the New England Navy color!! 😍😍
THAT was my second choice!!
I just came across your site as we have been looking for the perfect coral color to paint our front door. We have now found it on this post/blog and so appreciate you sharing your beautiful results. We plan to add some touches of turquoise with the coral door. We have found that painting the front door is one way to change the look without a lot of expense/time. It also makes a bold statement. We had a deep purple door first, then about 5 years ago, went to the lime.kiwi colored door, and now up for a change. Our little cape cod style house which is tan/brown in color lends itself to experiment with fun colors. Again, love the color- have an awesome summer!
Tammy,
I am just now seeing this! Thank you thank you for visiting and your kind words <3 Kiwi sounds SO fun!! I was so nervous when painting it this color, but I look at it daily and smile now 🙂 I hope you love it as much as we do! If you are on IG, I would love for you to share it with me when you are finished!
It’s beautiful! I’ve been wanting to paint our door but I am having trouble deciding on a color. Our house is a grey/blue, window trim is white, and shutters are black. I’m thinking coral may be the way to go!
Awesome!! Go for it!! You will love this paint 💕
Love it!! You inspire me to do more.
Awe, thank you so much!
