Flower Revival!

Good morning!  So, today’s blog is going to be short, and sweet!  If you enjoy fresh flowers like I do, this is definitely note worthy!  I have always enjoyed fresh flowers, but since starting my blog and concentrating on my photography and capturing the simple beauty flowers add to any style of decor, I have definitely invested in their presence more.  Seems each time I go to the grocery store, I pick up a small bouquet.

I have found that tulips rank up there in my top 5, but I have also learned a lot about them.  Did you know they continue to grow after you snip them? I just recently learned this.  That’s why after just a few days, your vase full of fresh cut stems are leaning over completely.  This was becoming highly frustrating to me, so I decided to google the possibility of reviving them to the upright stance once again.  The information I am sharing with you is available on the web and websites are listed at the end, I just did the research for you, so enjoy!

Maybe you all know these tricks already.  I was skeptical, and then truly amazed… One thing I have started doing is always filling my vase with lukewarm water.  Flowers are stimulated by warmth and slowed down by cold.  It is critical for flowers to take up water immediately after being cut, so placing in warm water is better than cold.  I am going to list out the steps I took in reviving wilted tulips next,  it’s exciting stuff!

  1.   Fill another vase with lukewarm water for the freshly cut tulips.
  2.   With sharp spears or a knife, snip about a 1/2 inch from the stem and do this while holding under lukewarm water.  This prevents air  bubbles from creeping into the fresh cut stem.  You should always make a diagonal cut.
  3.   Remove any lower leaves.
  4.   Wrap tulip stems in a paper, I used freezer paper for example.  Wrap them into a cone shape so that the top of the tulips are NOT sticking out the top of the cone.
  5.   Wrap a rubber-band around the paper cone to secure.
  6.   Emerse the stem portion of the cone into the vase of lukewarm water.
  7.   Set the vase of wrapped tulips underneath a light for 2 hours.
  8.   Remove the paper and place tulips in a vase of clean water.  Voila!! It works!!

Ok, next up – Hydrangeas.  I just happened to visit Sheila’s Sunny Bloomers at the right time a few weekends ago.  She had beautiful white hydrangeas, definitely top 5, maybe #1 on my favorite’s list.  They are so fun to decorate with whether you enjoy them in a vase or snip the heads and use them as a nest.  I just love them!

After a few days, I was so saddened when 2 out of the 3 blooms were wilting!! This next photo is kind of sad.

IMG_6281

I know that hydrangeas can last up to 10 days easy, so I went to google again.. and after a little bit of digging, I brought life back into these hydrangeas.  This is the kind of info you don’t forget!

  1.   Fill another vase with lukewarm water for the freshly cut hydrangeas.
  2.   Boil a small pot of water, only about 1 – 1/2 inches of water.  After water boils, pour into heat safe container.
  3.   With sharp spears or a knife, snip about a 1/2 inch from the stem and do this while holding  under lukewarm water.  This prevents air bubbles from creeping into the fresh cut stem.  You should always make a diagonal cut.

3.  Remove any lower leaves.

4.  Hold bottom part of stem in hot water for 30 seconds and immediately return to fresh vase of room temperature – lukewarm water.  It will take several hours but as the water works it’s way up the stems, your blooms will revive.   I followed these steps before I went to bed and when I awoke the next morning, this next photo is my newly revived hydrangeas.

I could not believe it!  I was so impressed with the tulip trick and now this!!  Isn’t this magnificent information?!  You all know I love feedback, so fill me in the next time you revive your flowers, or if you have another secret!  Have a great week!!

You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this
matter to be actually something which I think I would never understand.
It seems too complex and extremely broad for me.
